Bento boxes are a Japanese to-go box that traditionally contains an entire meal, often for lunch. These packages date back to the Kamakura Era in the 12th century when workers would bring cooked rice with them to work. This practice eventually progressed into using wooden boxes for parties and then commuters and students using them on a daily basis to transport their lunch. Japanese cuisine is adept at providing diners with a variety of options that are sure to fill any belly. The flavors are generally more mild, focusing on a blend of sweet and savory flavors that are light on spice. Bento boxes will allow your entire team to experience the full range of flavors that Japanese cuisine has to offer!
Be mindful of food temperature! Some bento boxes contains hot items (entrees, rice, gyoza, etc.) and cold items (seaweed salad, California rolls, salad). This can lead to meals becoming lukewarm so it is important to make sure that your delivery time is close to the time you plan on eating.
Many dishes are not gluten-free as they include soy sauce, which is wheat-based. For example: tonkatsu, crusted with panko bread crumbs. (GF) will appear next to the dish if it is gluten-free.
Bento boxes are typically all-in-one meal boxes that are perfect for lunches. Here at CaterCow, we have expanded the definition to also include individually packaged Japanese entrees. The word “bento” is derived from the slang term biàndāng, which means “convenient.”
Can I order soup?
We typically don’t do soups as a side for Japanese bento box catering because soup is hard to transport. Imagine finding out that a few meals were ruined in transport because a soup spilled! Plus if it arrives only lukewarm then the quality will suffer.
What goes well with a Japanese bento box?
Popular sides for Japanese entrees include edamame, gyoza (pan-fried dumplings), seaweed salad, California rolls (and other sushi rolls), veggie spring rolls and more!
Are there vegan and vegetarian options for Japanese bento box catering?
Yes! There are many Japanese entrees that can substitute meat for tofu or vegetables. Just look for the (V) or (VG) designations on each item as you put your order together!
